Sailing

Sailing is the foundation of our program. There is nothing like untying the lines and slipping away from the dock under the power of wind on sail to help veterans feel "at ease." We conduct day sails or sunset sails aboard a large catamaran out on beautiful Biscayne Bay. Our sunset sails are the most popular and are usually conducted as a "reunion" event for veterans and their spouses following redeployment.

Our "Learn to Sail" program continues the healing and reintegration process by teaching veterans a healthy, lifelong recreational skill. This course is taught by US Sailing certified volunteer instructors (who are also veterans) accompanied by recreational therapists from the Miami VA Medical Center. Those who complete the learn to sail class are encouraged to participate in local community sailing events.

Diving

SCUBA Diving is a sport that challenges veterans to explore a completely different environment: the undersea world! Veterans Ocean Adventures offers DISCOVER SCUBA DIVING, a three hour introduction to the sport conducted in a pool setting. After veterans receive a brief familiarization of the equipment and a basic overview of skills needed they proceed to the deep end of the pool under the supervision of an instructor. Here veterans experience breathing on SCUBA while floating weightless in the water column! Veterans Ocean Adventures connects those interested in pursuing certification with instructors who understand their needs and with community resources for financial assistance, if needed, to offset the cost of training. Veterans Ocean Adventures sponsors or co-hosts special events such as Veterans Dives, Adaptive SCUBA training and the Weeki Wachee Warrior Challenge.
